Playing down racism
The first reactions to the attack on the Black Ermyas M. in Potsdam was one of shock. Politicians and media all condemned the attack. It was generally accepted that it was a racist attack (with the exception of the ministers of the interior). By now the conservative side had enough time to formulate a counter argument. On the one side they argue that the attackers were not right extremist (because they do not belong to any organisation), on the other they are busily discrediting the victim (arguing he had drunken, was aggressive, etc.). And they are successfull in doing so. More and more people are now joining in in playing down the racist nature of the attack. And doing so fuelling the racism in Germany.

Racism continued
German conservative politicians continue to play down the racist context of the attack on the Black man in Potsdam. They claim that also blond blue-eyed people are attacked - even by people without German citizenship. This is a quote from our minister of the interior, not just some stupid racist on the margin of society. Meanwhile the racist attacks on Blacks continue, Blacks define No-Go-Areas to save their lives.

Russia seems to be similarly bad (see BBC).

Separation of state and religion
As far as I know the German constitution proclaims the separation of state and religion. The conservative politicians, however, seem to interprete the constitution differently. The minister for family has just started a coalition for education in which the two Christian churches are included but not the other religions. Even worse neither parents nor teachers are asked to participate. She is not only othering Jews and Muslims but all people who are secular.

Racism in Germany
The media reports on the racist attack on a Black man in Potsdam show how unused 'German' media and politicians are to talk about and recognise racism:

Although it has been recorded how the attackers called the victim 'nigger', there are politician who still doubt that it was a racist attack.

The victim is called 'African', 'German of African decent', etc. Nobody is quite sure how to call him. The term Black is still used almost only by the Blacks themselves.

The attackers are not characterised as White. That is the norm anyway.

Hardly anyone seems to recognise that even before the attack Black people did not feel save in Potsdam or most other parts in Germany.

We really need more awareness about racism in Germany.

Surprising
Politicians are surprised by the attack on the Black man.
Blacks are probalby not surprised.
They are used to the threat of racism wherever they go.
Only Whites can be surprised by it, because they are not the target of racism and can thus ignore it.

Racist attack
Being Black in Germany is still dangerous. A Black man has been attacked in Potsdam. He is in hospital, his life is in danger. The police consider it a xenophobic attack (racism is not the category they work with). The media talk of an 'African' who has been attacked, although he has the German nationality.

Popetown in Germany
Soon also German tv will show Popetown. And already conservative politicians want this blasphemous tv series to be banned.

Mosques in Germany
This time it are the Ahmadiyas who want to build a mosque in Berlin. And as in most cases where 'migrants' want to built religious buidlings in Germany (a Hindu mandir is not less affected by this than a mosque) the locals oppose to it fiercely. In this case they scanded racist and islamphobic slogans and threatened to set the mosque on fire.

It is alarming how openly White 'Germans' voice their racism and islamophobia. It seems to be becoming increasingly normal to do so. I hope very much that I overinterpret. But I do not think so.

'Honour killing'
A young man has been convicted for killing his sister. The media are convinced it was a 'honour killing'. They are convinced his elder two brothers were involved. The court, however, found not enough evidence for this and acquited them. The media and politicians do not mind. They are still convinced it was a 'honour killing'. The whole family was involved. They are convinced. The minister for the interior in Berlin has asked the family to leave the country.

Incredible, how they are all ignoring the principles of a constitutional state: innocent until proven guilty. For Muslims the rule seems to be different.

PS 15.04.06:: My German post on the topic has been commented on massively. I have been accussed of trivialising the murder. My argument that also Muslims should be considered innocent until proven guilty has been not understood? not seen as relevant? not seen as adequate in this case? But I still believe in it. As much as I condemn murders committed in the name of 'honour'.
